Trash Talking and Shop Talking-Love Is In The Air

Y'all, I'm in love and Cat Daddy knows all about it! There are no secrets between us, in fact he took me this weekend for my first rendezvous with my new love. He drove Miss Lazy to North Richland Hills to visit Golightly's Gallery & Antiques and for me it was love at first sight. Before you feel too sorry for him, let me add he was pretty impressed as well. The store is just beautiful! Wonderful merchandise, both old and new, gorgeous displays, friendly ladies eager to help you in your purchases. Everything you would want an antique shopping experience to be.
Oh and the displays were in three words...Fab U Lous!!! If you don't come away with ideas on how to put the oomph back into your home, well you must have left your glasses at home. The walls themselves talk to you. Everywhere you look, there is a visual treat for the eyes.

I should have packed a bag because I could have stayed just in this area forever! I wonder if room service comes with this bed, because a girl sure would feel pampered in a bedroom like this.

This sofa was to die for! It's one of the first things you see when you come in the front door. Look at the walls...mmm, yummy!

I saw so much I wanted to purchase and I did buy a few things. I'll give y'all a look at my loot in a later post. Did I mention I'm in love?

This area was in the bathroom! Not an inch of space is wasted in this delightful store. Got several ideas for my own bath just from this tiny room. I swear up and down, you'll come away with something, even if it is an idea to take home. All their fabric treatments are clever. The store is very tactile, inviting you to touch and feel. Believe me, I did. Oh and by the way, there is fabric for sale as well.

Stormy weather ahead? No problem...let your smile be your umbrella. You will be smiling a lot perusing all that is offered here.

For the lovers of cream and white this store abounds with it. There is also browns used in abundance with black thrown in for that dramatic punch.
There is a tea room located in Golightly's, but I couldn't get a photo of it because it was packed. You never heard such laughter! This store has really got it going on and I invite you to visit the next time you are in the Ft. Worth area. I promise y'all, you won't be disappointed. Until next time, Debbie

Grandma's old embroidery

My grandma and my mother had a passion for pretty things, and hand embroidered dresser scarves and tablecloths were displayed all over the house. By the time they came to me, many were yellowed and stained. Some could be revived, but others sadly were hopeless to use as they once were intended.

Below are a couple of examples of rescued vintage embroidery. This is a dresser scarf that the ends were still in lovely condition. The center part that was stained, I cut away for the rag drawer.

I created a pair of pretty hanger covers using a sweet coordinating pink roses print, and added lots of vintage and new button details

This pair of hanger covers--these are made from the corners of a tablecloth! Note how grammy must have run out of pink thread--she used blue to finish. She made this tablecloth during the depression.

I have also designed pillows and purses from lovely rescued linens. I have these and more items available for sale on my website Marionberry Cottage
Thanks for letting me share with you today!

Recycled Box Spring

Several weeks ago I was at a local thrift shop (the kind of place that should be called "Ed's Bargains" ~ just a menagarie of stuff laying on the floors and stacked on folding tables). It's been on that corner for years but it looked like a dump so I didn't bother visiting until that day when we had occasion to step inside. I actually found some unique old things (of course! Shame on me for judging a book by its cover).
I saw this box spring standing by itself near the restrooms. I left it there... because, really, what could a person need with a 1900 box spring? But a week later I couldn't stop thinking about the possibilities. I've seen them at Marburger and other shows used as walls or ceilings for booths (great creative way to display items but in real life, what was I going to do with it?). Well, I had a heck of time convincing my husband, let me tell you. But I think it'll be one of my most fun decorating tools ever. Today it's on the mantle...

Do you have any ideas that I should try?

Vintage Valentines

Unlike Halloween ephemera, vintage Valentines are pretty easy to find and inexpensive on etsy and ebay, as well as antique shops. Use them to create collaged notes and dedorations, or if you're out of time, these are available at VintageScraps.etsy.com! Don't forget to sign up for Go Green Wednesday. See the post below!

Cambridge Glass

Hi, I'm Cindy from My Romantic Home blog and I'm very honored to be a contributor to The Vintage Journal now!  I thought I would share my new obsession...Cambridge Glass!  One of my blog readers, Lorrie, who is an avid collector of Cambridge glass recently gifted me with the above individual sized creamer and sugar set.  It is gorgeous and I've been on eBay a lot lately looking for more Cambridge Glass!  Here are some pieces I found there that I think are so beautiful!

When I posted about Cambridge Glass on my blog last week, it seemed to interest many of my readers.  Lorrie, who is so nice, wrote up the following for me about Cambridge and Heisey glass to share with you:
These glass companies were in business during the 30s and 40s; they are known for producing what is classified as "elegant" glass - superior in quality to "depression" glass. Both of these designations are on e-bay under "pottery and glass." Cambridge glass pieces often have a hallmark on the bottom which is a "c" inside a triangle. Heisey glass usually has a hallmark of a "H" inside a diamond.

There's lots of both out there, but it helps to focus your collection efforts on a particular pattern - it helps limit the frustration level associated with being a passionate collector! Also, smaller pieces often command higher prices because they are usually more fragile and therefore they broke easier than their larger counterparts.

One place that would be a good place for novice collectors to start is to read books on the subject, and there are many. Barnes and Noble has an entire section dedicated to antiques and collecting. If money for books is an issue, they can check their local library to see if they have books on collecting. I have developed a personal library of books about the various items I collect - thus I have yet another collection - books, lots of books!! See, one thing leads to another!!!

One book I would recommend is "Florence's Glassware Pattern Identification Guide." It's a great way to educate ourselves about the numerous glass makers/patterns/styles of glass. It's available on Amazon.

Ok, class resumes later...ready for an exam?

Lorrie
Thank you so much Lorrie for the lesson on Cambridge and Heisey Glass!  The only bad thing is that we may all be bidding against each other on eBay now!!!
